| | A family orthodontic practice with a personal touch
Comfort and a commitment to patient care – and a healthy dose of fun – highlight the successful adult, adolescent and child practice of orthodontist Dr. Joel Schacher. “In an era when high tech has become so prevalent, the human touch is often lost. Not here,” says Dr. Schacher. Dr. Schacher and his carefully selected team of technical and administrative support staff create a friendly, personable environment for his top-quality practice. “Every patient has individual orthodontic needs. They also have their own personal objectives and goals. We work together to establish a comprehensive plan for the optimal result,” Dr. Schacher adds. Care begins with a complimentary clinical assessment at Dr. Schacher’s inviting office in the East Tower of the Sussex Center. The doctor and patient discuss the benefits of various types of orthodontic therapy. This is followed by a treatment conference where Dr. Schacher uses x-rays, study-models and photographs to illustrate specific recommendations, duration of treatment and fee. Dr. Schacher’s treatment plans are based on years of clinical orthodontic experience having practiced orthodontics since 1980. He completed his undergraduate and dental training at the University of Toronto and received his orthodontic certification at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. This training facility is world-renowned for its dental specialty programs and research. Dr. Schacher also taught orthodontics to dental residents at Hamilton General Hospital for seven years. Many of Dr. Schacher’s patients are the family and friends of satisfied patients. Some are the children of successfully treated patients. Others have personally selected Dr. Schacher. Still, more have been referred to Dr. Schacher by general dentists and other dental specialists. “I build relationships through trust,” Dr. Schacher explains. “Patients are assured of professionalism. But we also maintain a light atmosphere. A fun office keeps patients, especially the younger ones, looking forward to each visit. It also makes dental home-care rules that much more agreeable.” The fun is evident from the entrance to Dr. Schacher’s office. Children and the young-at-heart laugh to the latest comedy videos. Patients sport complimentary T-shirts with cartoon characters wearing braces. The bulletin board is crowded with entries to Dr. Schacher’s latest contests. Cupboards are filled with braces-friendly treats and there are neon-colored pencils, pens and sticker. But more important than any of these extras is the attentive care provided to each patient. Dr. Schacher places almost all orthodontic appliances, including braces, bands and brackets in patients’ mouths himself. “I really believe that the orthodontist has an obligation to accomplish what he was trained to do, “ says Schacher. “It takes expertise to perform these procedures and that is part of my mandate – To Provide Personal Care.” This care goes beyond achieving outstanding orthodontic improvements. Excellent oral hygiene and home care are encouraged by providing all patients with regular oral hygiene instruction in conjuction with their family dentist. A complimentary professional-style mouth guard provided at the end of treatment protects the patient’s excellent new smile from sports injury. Dr. Schacher’s patient coordinator is a resource greatly appreciated by prospective patients. This staff member helps ease patients into treatment by making them feel more welcome, meeting their needs and answering their questions. This special link with a staff member takes the worry and apprehension out of starting something new – even the adventure of orthodontics! Many of Dr. Schacher’s hygienists, clinical assistants and office staff are long-term Schacher team members. They provide all the necessary support to operate the successful practice. They regularly attend continuing education conferences to enable them to serve patients more effectively. Office hours are flexible, and early-morning or after-hours appointments are available to accommodate busy schedules. Payment plans are customized to meet individual patient needs. “As a family-oriented practice, we are committed to treating our patients as extensions of our own families,” Dr. Schacher explains. “By providing individual treatment rooms, a consultation area and a degree of privacy, patients of all ages are nurtured and placed at ease. Our patients enjoy being here, receiving not only a positive dental experience, but enormous personal gratification as well.”
